ABOUT
HAL is a self-taught oil painter based in Melbourne. Originally from a coastal town in New South Wales, Hal's work reflects an ongoing tension between the demands of city life and a longing for a deeper connection to nature. Working over extended periods, HAL builds rich, layered hues in a slow, methodical process. Both the process and the result is their way of reconnecting to nature’s energising tranquility.

Flowers hold some of natures most highly saturated colours yet when walking to work or on your way to the gym, we so rarely stop to admire them. This piece is the first in an ongoing series where I sample colours from different fauna to create a hypnotic and highly saturated abstract expression of them.
Crocosmia, otherwise known as montbretia, is considered an aggressive growing weed here in Australia as it ‘out-competes’ native plants- I think it’s domineering colours are a pretty accurate reflection of it’s true nautre.
