ABOUT
HAL is a self-taught oil painter based in Melbourne. Originally from a coastal town in New South Wales, Hal's work reflects an ongoing tension between the demands of city life and a longing for a deeper connection to nature. Working over extended periods, HAL builds rich, layered hues in a slow, methodical process. Both the process and the result is their way of reconnecting to nature’s energising tranquility.

WP.01’ is the first piece in a series of immersive oil paintings that aims to bring the mental rest and rejuvenation experienced when in nature.         
            This piece is very special to me. It is the painting that changed how I practised art and as a result how I interact with nature now. After a camping trip to Wilsons Promontory National Park, I was completely mesmerised by the diversity of the landscape. From desert like sand dunes,  to tropical looking rainforests and pristine squeaky beaches I knew i wanted to capture not only what I saw, but really what I felt. After much exploration, this large-scale colour field painting was born, using colours sampled from the site and abstracted into this enchanting form.
