ABOUT
HAL is a self-taught oil painter based in Melbourne. Originally from a coastal town in New South Wales, Hal's work reflects an ongoing tension between the demands of city life and a longing for a deeper connection to nature. Working over extended periods, HAL builds rich, layered hues in a slow, methodical process. Both the process and the result is their way of reconnecting to nature’s energising tranquility.

These colours are sampled from a cloudy twilight evening I spent on a beach along the Great Ocean Road. The pale sand was lit just enough to highlight it’s contrast among the darkening ocean and sky, offset by these beautiful clouds trasnitioning from a deep purple, to a vibrant orange. I wanted to capture this feeling of darkness englofing you; not in a fearful way, but in a gentle approaching of one of nature’s beautiful transitions.
